THE 1000 DAY INITIATIVE

Why the first 1000 days?

The first few years of life are critical for long-term growth.

New advances in neural development find that 80 percent of lifetime brain development happens before age three. Synapse formation is at its fastest in this window.

ALL YOUNG CHILDREN THEREFORE NEED CERTAIN FOUNDATIONAL RESOURCES TO GROW AND THRIVE.

Without these means, kids can be negatively affected for the rest of their lives. In particular, young children need two things to ensure healthy development:

1. Adequate nutrition

To fuel their growing brains and bodies.

2. Stimulating environments

To foster their neural development.

THE POTENTIAL COSTS OF NEGLECTING EARLY CHILDHOOD ARE HIGH

Delayed development in early childhood has been linked to reduced IQ, more behavioral problems, worse school outcomes, higher likelihood of criminal behavior, and lower lifetime income.

WHEREAS THE BENEFITS OF INVESTING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD ARE HUGE AND LONG-LASTING

Studies on successful early childhood interventions have shown that every dollar invested in ECD programs will result in savings from $7 to $13—a rate of return that outpaces the stock market.
